Rep. Andrews discusses workforce development with Northwest Regents

The Northwest Missouri State University Board of Regents heard a legislative update from Missouri 1st District State Representative Allen Andrews during yesterday morning's meeting.

Andrews says the upcoming legislative session will include more discussions on workforce development and higher education's role in training workers.

"There is a goal to have 60% of adults with a certified degree by 2020.  So there's a lot of concern of course with our workforce and find people that are adequately equipped and trained to be able to do the job that is needed."

Andrews also says he feels legislators are getting a better understanding of the importance of higher education and the need for more funding for higher education institutions.

"The message is a little more positive going forward.  I think my colleagues understand that probably maybe more now than they did a few years ago.  So I'm really hoping that we see more emphasis on higher ed funding as we get the new session rolling here before long."

The Northwest Board of Regents also approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the Greater Kansas City Hispanic Development Fund during their Wednesday morning meeting.
